Introducing the T1R Range - Hybrid Laser Distance Digital Tape Measure Tool

T1 owner considering upgrading to the T1R – a few questions

Hi!

I’ve owned my T1 Tomahawk for about 1.5 years now, and I’m really happy with it!

I’m mainly a DIY user, and unfortunately, I haven’t had nearly as many projects as I’d hoped, so my T1 hasn’t seen as much use as it deserves. But whenever I use it, I really enjoy it!

Now I’m seriously considering upgrading to the T1R while the pre-order discount is still available.

My main reasons are the smaller size and lower weight, as I’ve always found the original T1 a bit bulky, and of course the integrated laser distance meter. I already own several high-quality laser distance meters, but having everything in one device would be fantastic!

Before ordering, I have a few questions:

1. Battery drain

With my T1, I always remove the battery when storing it for longer periods because it slowly drains even when switched off.

How is this handled on the T1R? Is there still noticeable battery drain during storage, and is there proper protection against deep discharge that could damage the battery?

2. Settings and metric units

Have the settings and customization options improved?

One thing I’ve been waiting for since getting my T1 is the ability to completely disable imperial units. Here in Germany, I only use metric units, and having to cycle through all the imperial options is rather annoying.

Can unused units finally be hidden?

I do quite a bit of programming myself, so I understand that even seemingly small changes need proper testing. But with modern development tools, including AI assistance, I’d love to see more small quality-of-life improvements like this, wherever the hardware allows it and other users could benefit too.

3. Bluetooth hardware

Does the T1R use a different Bluetooth chipset?

I’ve integrated my T1 into a custom Raspberry Pi application using Bluetooth keyboard emulation. Unfortunately, the constantly changing Bluetooth MAC address caused quite a few headaches and required some workarounds.

Has this behavior changed with the T1R? Are there any new Bluetooth configuration options or improvements for custom integrations?

4. Included accessories

Does the T1R include a holster and the plastic toolbox clip, like the original T1? I actually use that clip quite a lot and would hate to lose it!

5. A proper walkthrough video?

I really enjoy your short videos on YouTube and Facebook!

But I’d love to see a longer, more detailed walkthrough showing the entire device, its buttons, menus, UI, settings, and measuring modes in action.

The Shorts are great for showing off individual features, but they’re often too fast to really understand how everything works together.

Maybe a 10–15 minute video? Or have I simply missed one?

6. Improvements under the hood

Besides the obvious new features, what else has changed compared to the original T1?

For example, have you improved the encoder, tape mechanism, line laser, processor, or other internal hardware?

Is the T1R based on a significantly newer hardware platform that offers more potential for future firmware features and improvements?

And will the original T1 continue receiving firmware updates?

I know that’s quite a few questions, but I’m genuinely interested in the technical improvements and the decisions behind the new design.

I really appreciate what you’ve built with the T1, and even though I don’t use mine as often as I’d like, I’m very tempted to upgrade!

Thanks for all the work you put into the products, the videos, and especially for being so active and responsive here in the forum!

Cheers from Germany!
